Ossi päätti hyödyntää TaiKin kautta avautuneen mahtavan vaihto-opiskelumahdollisuuden, ja koska kaksin on kuulema aina kaunihimpi päätimme molemmat vaihtaa hetkeksi maisemaa. NORDIK2 siis tutkailee ja fiilistelee  tällä hetkellä elämänmenoa Kiinan nopeiten kasvavassa kaupungissa Shanghaissa (21miljoonaa kiinalaista + me kaksi). Muotoilun todellinen haaste on suunnitella toimivia ja kauniita esineitä arjen työkaluiksi. Kaj Franckin tuotannon ja ajattelun inspiroimina muotoilun laitoksen maisteriopiskelijat paneutuivat juomaesineistön ja kalusteiden suunnitteluun keväällä 2011. Jälleen kerran tehtävänä oli tarkastella arkiesineen ideaa, muotoa ja käyttöä. Yksinkertaisessa ja tiukasti rajatussa tehtävässä esineiden muoto, käyttötapa, materiaali ja rakenne antoivat mahdollisuuden persoonallisten ja luovien ratkaisujen tekemiseen.

HELP: Home Experimental Living Product is a collection of useful household objects, which are made to fit in today's home. The project started with the research of different housing problems inside apartments with people aged 20 to 40. All participants found an existing problem within the apartment and created a solution. The result of the project is 12 different examples using experimental design and high usability.

AVOIN on Helsingin Veistokouluna vuonna 1871 aloittaneen Taideteollisen korkeakoulun 140-vuotisjuhlanäyttely. Se ei ole vain kronologinen katsaus taideteollisen alan korkeimman opetuksen kehittymiseen. Se ei myöskään ole pelkkä teoskavalkadi esittelemässä suomalaisen taiteen ja muotoilun menestystarinoita. AVOIN tahtoo sukeltaa syvemmälle taideteollisen opiskelun ja opetuksen ytimeen, tuoda ne havainnollisella ja omintakeisella tavalla jokaisen näyttelyvieraan ulottuville. AVOIN on avoimen mielen, luomisprosessien, tulkintojen, kommunikaation ja tulevaisuuden juhla.

Me and my colleague, Ossi, are a ”little bit” obsessed about fonts. I think my personal font-madness started in my second year in design-school. We were designing an exhibition with my classmate, and we ended up shoveling different fonts everywhere we possibly could. Fonts, letters and layouts made us crazy. OK, I know it can’t be avoided, because in every exhibition there usually are lot’s of places that needs fonts and layouts, but I really kind of snapped somehow when I realized how many possibilities there are with fonts in this world. The exhibition turned out great in spite of this font-madness, and in spite it was my first experience in many ways. After my first ”font-experience”, there has been constantly favorite-font periods after another. I have gotten exited about one specific font beyond any other, and used it in everywhere I could. If I looked at my old school projects now, I could tell which font was ”hot” then :) Nowadays there’s off course more experience about using fonts and making layouts with different styles, but it wasn’t many years ago when a BIG Helvetica-jinx was laid upon me. I saw a document about Helvetica-font, and I got obsessed about it (and I still am a bit, but don't tell anyone). There should be some warning for the people starting to watch that film! (Beware of the Helvetica-curse?)

I was mailing a letter today in a post-office in Helsinki. I had to take it to the counter, because I wanted to mail it to Japan. The post-office-lady ask couple of questions and made me fill some info tag for the customs. Then she asked me if I wanted stamps instead of plain sticker. She showed me some quite elegant and simple blue colored stamps with white snowflakes on them. She thought that they would go well with the black’n’white sticker that I had put on the white envelope.  I was impressed about her commitment to her work in an aesthetic way. She clearly wanted to make the simple white envelope look good and representative as possible.

This event got me into thinking about our aesthetic eyes, and the way we see things. If the post-office-lady sees beauty and possibilities in just white envelope and a couple of stamps, does for example a bricklayer see a magical unexplained beauty in a row of straight laid bricks. Or does a tomato farmer see some tickling beauty in a perfectly shaped fresh red tomato?

NORDIK2 is helping out in a design-process of a new product for Nahkakunta. This product is to be made in Taiwanese factory, so we had a great opportunity to get together with the great inventor and factory owner Mr. Ko in Taiwan. There was an intensive two days of brainstorming and developing ideas for the product, checking the measurements and exploring the 3D-printed mock-up that we brought with us from Finland. Purpose was to perfect the product to make a prototype.

ARTIKKELIN ON KIRJOITTANUT SIMO HEIKKILÄ HELSINGIN SANOMIIN 9.9.2010. SIMO HEIKKILÄ ON SISUSTUSARKKITEHTI JA HUONEKALUSUUNNITTELUN PROFESSORI AALTO-YLIOPISTON TAIDETEOLLISESSA KORKEAKOULUSSA.

Käyttäytymistämme on alkanut ohjata loputon ahneus, joka on saanut meidät vieraantumaan ympäristöstämme. Urbaanissa ympäristössä asuva ihminen joutuu elämänsä aikana tekemisiin arviolta 20 000–30 000 esineen kanssa. Määrä vaikuttaa käsittämättömän suurelta. On vähintään kohtuullista odottaa, että nuo esineet ovat hyvin suunniteltuja, kestäviä ja jokseenkin helppokäyttöisiä. Täysin turhanpäiväisten ja joutavien tavaroiden määrää on mahdotonta arvioida. Jokainen pystyy kuitenkin tekemään listan itselleen välttämättömistä esineistä, joita ilman elämästä ei tule mitään. Laskemisen voi aloittaa vaikkapa keittiössä aamukahvia juodessaan. Olen itse arvioinut, että normaaleista asumiseen liittyvistä toimista selviää 50 käyttöesineellä. Käytännössä se merkitsee noin kymmentä huonekalua ja suurin piirtein neljääkymmentä pienesinettä, joista valtaosa on ruoanlaittoon ja ruokailuun tarkoitettuja. Tässä ajattelussa vesi, maito ja viini juodaan samasta lasista.
